AmeriCorps NCCC Class 19 Corps Member Spotlight: Michael Heisser

He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 6 is made up of eight people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

2013 Iowa State Fair Set to Debut In Two Weeks

"Happiness Is" being just two weeks away from the debut of the 2013 Iowa State Fair. Don't miss out on everything the Fair has to offer including half a million dollars in free stage entertainment, delectable foods, livestock galore and more. "Nothing Compares" to Iowa's largest 11-day celebration set August 8-18. Fairgoers can enjoy their favorite activities all day.

Patrick Bower, from Charleston, Ill., is a member of Cedar 4 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Cedar 4 is made up of nine people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

NCCC Cedar 2 Restores Prairies in Jo Daviess County

The team removes Canadian Thistle at Wapello Land & Water Reserve. By Ilexis Elba AmeriCorps NCCC team Cedar 2 is stationed in Jo Daviess County doing environmental conservation and restoration work until August 2. They have been working with Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The teamhelped in restoring the Wapello prairie land and cleaning up an old abandoned military base, now named Lost Mound National Wildlife Refuge.

NCCC Oak 1 takes away the pane

Oak 1 member Andrew Kuka from Paterson, N.J. shoveling gravel. By Teonna Clark For their third project, Oak 1 is working for Central Rivers Farmshed in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.  Oak 1 picked up where another NCCC team left off by removing glass panes from an unfinished greenhouse. Moving swiftly, the team is removing the panes using scissor lifts from another greenhouse. Altogether, the team cleared out over one hundred pounds of glass so far, which was thrown into the dumpster after its removal.

VU Golf Tournament winners listed

Thanks for Joining us for The 2013 Vinton Unlimited 3-person Best Shot Tournament!   Thanks to everyone who came out and played in the VU golf tournament this year and thanks especially to our 2013 Hole & prize sponsors!  We couldn't have put on such a great tournament without each of you!   As most of you know, we had a few new "twists" to the tournament this year with a "Pick-a-Putt" tournament AND a poker run throughout the course.

NCCC Cedar 3 at the Cedar Rapids Science Center

Trent Roberts entertaining campers during before care. By Trent Roberts   AmeriCorps NCCC team Cedar 3 is working with the Science Center in Cedar Rapids until August 2. The team is assisting with various aspects of the Science Center’s programming for children.  So far, Cedar 3 has assisted children in activities in classes such as catching bugs and building an ant farm in Incredible Insects, creating a film in Movie Makers, pin the fin on the shark in Shark Bait and much more with even more to come! Cedar 3 has also helped prepare classes, assisted with before, noon and after care and a variety of other tasks.

NCCC Maple 2 team takes a camp approach in Nebraska National Forest

Maple 2 team member Katie hammers in a staple to the post of a fence. By David Chernyshov The NCCC team of Maple 2 is currently working with the Nebraska National Forest and Grasslands. This is home to the largest hand planted forest and oldest federal nursery in the world. During this project, the team is working at three locations in Nebraska:  Halsey, Chadron, and Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest.
